- Discussing the front cover of the book we are reading and asking questions to prompt discussion, such as, 'Who will the characters be?' and 'What do you think will happen?'
- Showing the children how to hold a book correctly, read from front to back and how to turn the pages one at a time.
- Talking about pictures and how these also tell the story. This really helps when children begin reading as they can decode words using the pictures as clues.
- Asking questions about the story to check the children's understanding.
- Retelling stories and sequencing the main events.
- Teaching unfamiliar words to build the children's vocabulary.
- Teaching phonics as a strategy for decoding and blending words.
- Writing our own stories or retelling stories through drawings.
Books are available everyday for you to take home and read with your child. The box is on top of the drawers outside.
